Prescribing
Our doctor holds a prescribing clinic, for heroin users, on a Wednesday evening. Following full assessments by a member of staff and the doctor, substitute medication such as methadone or subutex can be prescribed if appropriate. Our staff and the doctor will work closely with pharmacists to monitor this.
Auricular Acupuncture
Qualified workers can provide this service to young people who want to reduce withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings and who want help with relaxation. It involves inserting five fine needles into the outer part of each ear and sitting back and relaxing for a forty minute session. Acupuncture usually only happens after we know what people’s needs are and we have met with people a few times.
Access to rehab and detox
If this is identified as a need through our work, we will link up with the Community Drugs Team or the Community Alcohol Service, to find out what can be done and apply for funding and a place in a detox or rehab facility, if that is the right thing.
Work with Young People’s Groups
We can also meet with small, already established groups of young people who are using drugs and alcohol. We use exercises to encourage open discussion about young people’s real experiences of using drugs and alcohol, to increase awareness and knowledge, and to share harm reduction information within the group setting.
Needle Exchange
This scheme is open to young injecting users who are registered with us. We encourage young people using this service to work with us on their problems and difficulties, at the same time.
Condom Distribution
We are linked to health promotions for this service. After an initial assessment is done, the young person can be registered on the scheme, and will be able to use the service on an ongoing basis if appropriate.
Referring on to other services
We can help people get in touch with other services that can help them e.g. Vibes, CAMHS, GUM clinic.
