What to expect from Swanswell Alcohol Awareness Groups
Groups offer two essential ingredients for changing the way you use alcohol: support from like minded people and a toolkit to help you plan your change in alcohol use and maintain it.
The support comes from you and people like you who want to make positive changes to improve their health, enjoy life to the full and keep alcohol in its place.
The toolkit comes from us, but it’s only useful if you use it. It fits closely with the NHS emphasis on prevention and using people’s strengths. It will help you plan, stay motivated and move towards a healthier lifestyle.
Who should attend?
The groups are aimed at anyone who is currently drinking regularly above recommended limits; 2 – 3 units per day for women and 3 – 4 units per day for men. To give you some idea of what a unit means in alcohol terms, a 330ml bottle of strong lager is 1.65 units, a standard glass (175ml) of cabernet is 2.28 units.

Swanswell have been commissioned by the Heart of Birmingham Teaching Primary Care Trust to develop support for people drinking alcohol above recommended limits. |
 |
The first groups are being developed in Soho and Handsworth Wood with Ladywood and Aston following closely. Once these groups are established further groups will be developed across the Heart of Birmingham area.
